I would have thought that would be enough. The buck-boost regulator only has an output rating of 600mA but, as it all works when USB is connected, I would have thought it would also work with batteries with sufficient oomph as yours appear to have.The batteries I’m using are 1.2V 2800mAh rechargeable ones
There's GPIO23 which controls the regulator mode so might be worth having the software set that high to see if that improves things.
I was wondering if powered via VBUS and through a diode was making the regulator input voltage marginal but you power via VSYS. It would be worth applying a meter to see what you do have on the input and 3V3.
